Good morning everyone,
Yanwei Hu here from Cymber Metal.
When customers come to me needing the absolute highest strength aluminum we can supply, I almost always point them toward the 7xxx series. These zinc-alloyed grades are the strongest commercially available aluminum alloys, offering tensile strengths that can exceed 570 MPa after proper heat treatment — making them the go-to material when weight savings and mechanical performance are both critical.
In 2026, with aerospace programs ramping up, high-end tooling demands increasing, and performance sports equipment pushing limits, 7xxx aluminum continues to be one of our most requested high-strength series. At Cymber Metal we stock and machine significant volumes of 7xxx plates, rods, square bars, hex bars, profiles, tubes, and custom CNC parts every month.
This guide draws directly from our daily production experience: the key grades, real-world applications, advantages and limitations, machining tips, and lessons learned on the shop floor.
7xxx Series Aluminum Alloys Overview and Grade Comparison
The 7xxx series is heat-treatable and zinc-based, delivering the highest strength-to-weight ratio among aluminum alloys.
| Grade | Zinc Content | Key Properties | Best Product Forms We Supply | Common Tempers | Typical Applications | Relative Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7075 | 5.1–6.1% | Highest strength, excellent fatigue resistance | Plates, rods, square bars, hex bars | T6, T651 | Aerospace, tooling, high-stress parts | High |
| 7050 | 5.7–6.7% | Better stress corrosion resistance than 7075 | Thick plates, forgings | T7451, T7651 | Aircraft structures, military components | High |
| 7068 | 7.3–8.3% | One of the strongest commercial alloys | Rods, bars, custom shapes | T6 | High-performance sports equipment | Very High |
| 7175 | 5.1–6.1% | Improved toughness over 7075 | Plates, forgings | T7351 | Aerospace forgings | High |
Quick Recommendation from the Shop:
7075-T651 is our most popular 7xxx grade for structural and machined parts. For thicker sections or better stress corrosion resistance, we often recommend 7050-T7451.
Where 7xxx Aluminum Alloys Excel in 2026
From our daily production, these are the primary areas where 7xxx alloys really shine:
- Aerospace & Defense Wing spars, fuselage frames, landing gear components — where every gram counts.
- High-End Tooling & Molds Injection molds, stamping dies, fixture plates — superior strength and dimensional stability.
- Performance Sports Equipment Bicycle frames, rock climbing carabiners, baseball bats — maximum strength-to-weight.
- Automotive & Motorsports Chassis components, suspension parts, high-performance wheels.
- Military & Ballistic Applications Armor components and protective structures.

-
Advantages of 7xxx Aluminum Alloys
- Highest strength of any aluminum series
- Excellent fatigue resistance
- Good machinability when properly tempered
- High toughness in certain tempers (especially T73/T74)
- Great for weight-critical designs
Challenges & Practical Solutions
7xxx alloys do have trade-offs:
- Lower corrosion resistance than 5xxx or 6xxx (often requires cladding or protective coatings)
- More sensitive to stress corrosion cracking in certain tempers
- Higher cost and more difficult to extrude/weld
Engineering Experience: In a recent high-performance bicycle frame project at Cymber Metal, we supplied 7068-T6 tubing. Initial welding trials showed cracking risks. We switched to 7075-T6 with proper post-weld heat treatment and added shot peening — the frames passed all fatigue tests with flying colors while maintaining the extreme lightweight the customer needed.
Pro Tip: For outdoor or marine exposure, always consider cladding or anodizing. For maximum stress corrosion resistance, choose T73 or T74 tempers instead of T6.
