Good morning everyone,
I’m Yanwei Hu, the Aluminum Alloys Technical Expert at Cymber Metal.
After many years working with aluminum on the production floor and helping customers worldwide select the right material, I’ve developed a real appreciation for the 3xxx series. These are the “workhorse” alloys of the aluminum family — offering an outstanding balance of formability, moderate strength, and excellent corrosion resistance at a very competitive price.
In 2026, with continued growth in construction, HVAC, chemical processing, automotive, and general manufacturing, 3xxx aluminum remains one of our most requested series. At Cymber Metal, we stock and process large volumes of 3xxx plates, sheets, rods, busbars, profiles, tubes, and custom CNC parts every month.
This guide shares practical knowledge from real production: the main grades we supply, where 3xxx alloys perform best, advantages and limitations, machining tips, and real shop-floor experience.
3xxx Series Aluminum Alloys Overview and Grade Comparison
The 3xxx series is primarily alloyed with manganese (Mn), giving it excellent formability and corrosion resistance while maintaining good weldability.
| Grade | Manganese Content | Key Properties | Best Product Forms We Supply | Typical Applications | Relative Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3003 | 1.0–1.5% | Excellent formability, good strength | Plates, sheets, rods, busbars | Roofing, chemical tanks, heat exchangers | Low |
| 3004 | 1.0–1.5% | Higher strength than 3003 | Sheets, profiles, tubes | Can lids, automotive parts | Low |
| 3105 | 0.3–0.8% | Good deep-drawing, cost-effective | Coils, sheets, profiles | Building siding, gutters | Low |
| 3005 | 1.0–1.5% | Balanced strength & corrosion resistance | Plates, rods, hex bars | General fabrication | Low |
Quick Recommendation from the Shop:
3003 is our most popular 3xxx grade — perfect balance of formability and strength for most general industrial and architectural projects. For slightly higher strength, we recommend 3004.
Where 3xxx Aluminum Alloys Shine in 2026
From our daily orders, these are the main areas where 3xxx alloys deliver the best value:
- Architectural & Construction Roofing, siding, gutters, window frames — beautiful appearance and long-term durability.
- Chemical & Food Processing Storage tanks, piping, heat exchangers — excellent corrosion resistance to many chemicals.
- HVAC & Heat Exchangers Fins, tubes, and housings — good thermal conductivity and formability.
- Automotive & Transportation Fuel tanks, panels, brackets — lightweight and corrosion resistant.
- General Fabrication Signage, enclosures, brackets, and custom machined parts.

-
Advantages of 3xxx Aluminum Alloys
- Excellent formability and deep-drawing capability
- Very good corrosion resistance in many environments
- Good weldability (TIG/MIG)
- Moderate strength (stronger than 1xxx, easier to form than 5xxx/6xxx)
- Cost-effective compared to higher-strength series
- Attractive natural silver finish or easy to anodize/paint
Challenges & Practical Solutions
3xxx alloys are relatively soft, so we watch for:
- Surface scratching during handling
- Lower strength than 5xxx or 6xxx for structural use
- Slightly gummy chips during high-speed machining
Engineering Experience: In a recent chemical tank project at Cymber Metal, a customer chose 3003 plates for a storage vessel. Initial forming showed minor wrinkling on deep draws. We recommended a slight increase in annealing temperature and adjusted the die radius — the final tanks came out perfectly smooth with no defects and excellent corrosion performance.
Pro Tip: For deep drawing or complex bending, always specify “H14” or “H24” temper for the best balance of formability and strength.
