Good morning everyone,
I’m Yanwei Hu, the Aluminum Alloys Technical Expert at Cymber Metal.
After many years working with aluminum in our production lines and helping customers solve real engineering challenges, I’ve come to appreciate the 1xxx series as the “pure heart” of aluminum alloys. These are the closest to commercially pure aluminum you can get — offering the highest electrical and thermal conductivity among all aluminum series, excellent corrosion resistance, and superb formability.
In 2026, with the rapid growth of renewable energy, data centers, EV thermal management, and high-efficiency electrical systems, 1xxx aluminum is seeing stronger demand than ever. At Cymber Metal, we stock and process large volumes of 1xxx plates, sheets, busbars, rods, and custom parts every month. This guide shares what I’ve learned from the shop floor: the main grades, real-world applications, advantages, challenges, and practical tips to help you choose and use 1xxx alloys effectively.
1xxx Series Aluminum Alloys Overview and Grade Comparison
The 1xxx series contains a minimum of 99.0% aluminum, with very low alloying elements. The last two digits indicate the minimum aluminum content (e.g., 1050 = 99.50% Al).
| Grade | Minimum Aluminum | Key Characteristics | Best Product Forms We Supply | Typical Conductivity (% IACS) | Relative Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1050 | 99.50% | Excellent formability, high purity | Plates, sheets, strips | 61–62 | Low |
| 1060 | 99.60% | Highest conductivity in common use | Busbars, rods, sheets | 61–62 | Low |
| 1070 | 99.70% | Superior electrical performance | High-end busbars, foils | 62–63 | Medium |
| 1100 | 99.00% | Good strength after work hardening | Plates, general sheets | 59–61 | Low |
Quick Recommendation from the Shop:
For most electrical and thermal projects, we recommend 1060 or 1070 — they offer the best conductivity-to-cost ratio. 1050 is excellent when deep drawing or forming is the priority.
Where 1xxx Aluminum Alloys Are Used in 2026
From our daily production, these are the main areas where 1xxx alloys deliver outstanding value:
- Electrical Power Distribution Busbars, conductors, and switchgear components — maximum conductivity with low heat generation.
- Renewable Energy Systems Solar panel frames, inverter busbars, and wind turbine electrical connections.
- Data Centers & Server Farms Power distribution busbars and cooling plates — critical for energy efficiency.
- Chemical & Food Processing Tanks, piping, and heat exchangers — excellent corrosion resistance and non-toxic.
- Lighting & Reflectors High-reflectivity sheets for LED and lighting fixtures.
- Heat Exchangers & Thermal Management Especially in EV battery cooling systems and HVAC coils.

-
Advantages of 1xxx Aluminum Alloys
- Highest electrical and thermal conductivity among aluminum alloys
- Excellent corrosion resistance in many environments
- Superior formability — easy to roll, draw, bend, and stamp
- Non-toxic and food-safe — widely used in processing equipment
- High reflectivity — ideal for lighting and decorative applications
- Fully recyclable — excellent sustainability profile
Challenges & Practical Solutions
1xxx alloys are very soft, so we pay attention to:
- Surface scratching during handling
- Lower strength compared to 5xxx or 6xxx
- Gummy chips during machining
Engineering Experience: In a recent EV battery cooling project at Cymber Metal, we used 1060 aluminum plates for cooling channels. The material was so soft that initial machining caused edge deformation. We adjusted to sharper PCD tools and lower feed rates — achieved perfect flatness and surface finish while maintaining the high thermal conductivity the customer needed.
Pro Tip: For machining 1xxx plates or busbars, always use very sharp tools and generous coolant — it makes a big difference in surface quality.
